Our Story

Mama’s Mobile Mercantile began with a simple idea: friendship, creativity, community, and craftsmanship bring tradition back to the next generation. Between the dedication to preserve fiber arts from Kelly and the love of pattern for Mary the innovative idea of bringing the seemly extinct yarn shop back to the community, on wheels, was born! Their passions bring the neighborhood yarn shop directly to you.

Housed inside a vintage bus, the Mama’s Mobile Mercantile travels throughout the Kentuckiana  area carrying carefully curated yarns, tools, and creative inspiration for makers of all levels.

Wherever the bus parks, it creates a small circle of creativity, conversation, and community—keeping the spirit of the local yarn shop alive while bringing it directly to the people it serves.

Meet the Owners

Kelly Seay

Kelly is the heart and heritage of Mama’s Mobile Mercantile. A lifelong fiber artist and talented knitter, Kelly’s love of yarn began decades ago and has only deepened over time. Her knowledge of fibers from texture to structure to sourcing forms the foundation of the Mercantile’s thoughtfully curated collection.

Mary and Kelly met at Kelly’s former shop and stayed connected through a local yarn group. It was Kelly’s enduring passion that sparked the vision for what Mama’s Mobile Mercantile would become.

With decades of experience and a true craftsman’s understanding of yarn, Kelly ensures the Mercantile remains rooted in quality, tradition, and authenticity. Her mission to keep fiber arts alive and accessible is what fuels this venture.

Mary Dowell

Mary is the innovative spirit behind Mama’s Mobile Mercantile. She discovered crochet seven years ago, and what began as curiosity quickly grew into a deep passion for fiber arts—earning her multiple blue ribbons at the Kentucky State Fair.

She continued refining her skills and loves crocheting baby blankets, exploring new patterns, and learning the subtle differences between fibers. As her appreciation for quality yarn grew, so did her desire to share that knowledge with others.

Mary brings the vision and momentum behind the Mercantile’s traveling yarn bus, helping create a welcoming space where creativity, craftsmanship, and community come together.
